The concept of a "Super Sunday" took on a new meaning this weekend as I found myself in Gurgaon, reuniting with friends from my days at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). There's something uniquely refreshing about reconnecting with people who shared a significant chapter of your life, especially when that chapter was as formative as our time in business school. The gathering brought together Ishaan Puri, Manoj Kumar Tripathi, Suresh Singh, Rohit Yadav, and myself - all former residents of the same wing in our college hostel. As we sat down for lunch, it felt like no time had passed since our last meeting, yet so much had changed in our lives.

Our conversation flowed freely, covering a wide range of topics from our current professional endeavors to personal milestones and everything in between. It was fascinating to see how our paths had diverged and intersected since our IIMB days. Some had ventured into entrepreneurship, others had climbed corporate ladders, and a few had taken unconventional routes that none of us could have predicted during our student years. Despite the different trajectories our lives had taken, the camaraderie and shared experiences from our time in the hostel created an instant connection that transcended the years we'd spent apart.

As we reminisced about our college days, memories came flooding back - late-night study sessions, impromptu cricket matches, heated debates in the mess hall, and the countless inside jokes that only we understood. These shared experiences formed the foundation of our friendship, and it was heartening to see that they still resonated with each of us. The lunch itself was enjoyable, but it was the company that truly made the day special. In the midst of our busy lives, taking the time to sit down and catch up face-to-face felt like a luxury, one that we all agreed we should indulge in more often.

As the afternoon wore on and we prepared to part ways, there was a collective realization of the value of maintaining these connections. In a world where digital communication often replaces physical meetings, this Super Sunday reunion served as a reminder of the irreplaceable nature of in-person interactions. We left with promises to meet more regularly, knowing that these friendships, forged in the crucible of our IIMB experience, were worth nurturing. The day reinforced the idea that while our lives may take us in different directions, the bonds we form during our formative years can provide a sense of grounding and continuity that enriches our lives long after we've left the halls of academia.

On the somber evening of March 7th, a message in our undergraduate Whatsapp group brought devastating news – the passing of Omkar Wagh on Sunday, March 2nd. The shockwaves reverberated through the group, leaving disbelief in their wake. It's difficult to comprehend that Omkar is no longer with us. His untimely departure has left behind a void, taking away a cherished friend and a peaceful soul.

Omkar and I shared the same hostel wing from 2006 to 2010 at IIT Bombay. We forged a bond that transcended the confines of our academic pursuits. Despite life's different paths leading us away from each other geographically, we managed to stay in touch and occasionally meet whenever our paths crossed in the same city.

However, amidst the busyness of life, I realize with a heavy heart that our communications had dwindled over the past year or so. It's a pang of regret knowing that I hadn't reached out as often as I should have.

Omkar Wagh, 09 March 2024

Hailing from Pune, I vividly remember the time we had the pleasure of meeting Omkar's parents during an industrial trip to Pune. Their warmth and hospitality left a lasting impression, adding depth to our friendship. In this moment of profound loss, my thoughts and prayers are with Omkar's family. Losing a loved one is never easy, and I can only hope they find the strength and courage to navigate through this difficult time. Omkar leaves behind his wife and children, and my heart goes out to them as they come to terms with their loss.

As we bid farewell to Omkar, I find solace in the memories we shared and the impact he had on those around him. His kindness, warmth, and genuine nature touched many lives, leaving behind a legacy of love and friendship.

To my dear friend Omkar, may you find eternal peace and serenity in the afterlife. Your presence will be dearly missed, but your memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.

As we bid farewell to the year 2023 on this 31st of December, it's a poignant moment to reflect on the journey, express gratitude for the experiences, and acknowledge the areas where personal growth can flourish in the upcoming year. While celebrating achievements, it's equally important to recognize the areas where I might have fallen short of my aspirations. Here's a gentle reminder of the goals that warrant attention in 2024.

Mindfulness - A Journey of Presence

In the pursuit of mindfulness, I have made progress, but moments of autopilot have been prevalent throughout 2023. Acknowledging the power of writing on pen and paper for clarity, the goal for 2024 is to be more intentional about cultivating presence. The commitment to daily 10-minute meditations will serve as a steadfast anchor in this mindfulness journey.

Mastering Social Media

Despite some strides in reducing social media consumption, the allure of platforms like Whatsapp, Instagram, and YouTube remains formidable. The goal for the upcoming year is to ruthlessly change defaults, limiting Whatsapp checks to twice a day and bidding farewell to YouTube and Instagram. This intentional shift aims to free up mental space and promote more meaningful interactions.

The timeline set for personal life progression, specifically in the context of marriage, did not happen in 2023. I have had several heartfelt conversations with loved ones seeking progress, and the commitment for the 2024 is to look at it with a renewed perspective and make it happen.

Building Connections

The realization that valuable learning often comes through connections with diverse individuals has highlighted the need to actively engage with new people. In 2024, the focus will be on expanding both physical and virtual networks, creating opportunities for meaningful interactions and learning through osmosis.

Proactive Pursuit of Long-Term Goals

Acknowledging a more reactive approach in 2023, the emphasis for the upcoming year is on proactive dedication to long-term goals. The recognition that progress often manifests when efforts are consistently directed towards the bigger picture underscores the importance of aligning actions with the 5-year plan.

As we hit a new year, it's essential to approach the journey with a sense of gratitude, learning, and purpose. While 2023 has been a year of growth, it also serves as a foundation for meaningful progress in the year to come. With a heart full of gratitude, I look forward to tackling these areas of improvement, knowing that each step forward is an opportunity for positive change. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year—may it be filled with growth, joy, and purpose. Another year, another step.

As the year 2023 draws to a close, it's an opportune time to reflect on the blessings and growth on the personal front. This gratitude journal serves as a testament to the positive aspects that have enriched my life in various dimensions.

Fitness Goals - A Journey of Wellness

The pursuit of fitness has been a cornerstone of my year. Regular swimming sessions, the adoption of running, and the initiation of weight training in the latter part of the year have not only contributed to physical well-being but also fostered a sense of discipline and resilience. While outdoor running faced challenges due to winter pollution, the gym provided a conducive space for this newfound passion.

Shifting House - A Sanctuary in the Sky

The decision to shift to a 4-bed flat on the 21st floor has proven to be transformative. The carefully chosen elements in the house, coupled with the breathtaking view, have turned it into a cozy sanctuary. The distance from the hustle and bustle, along with the serenity of the new home, aligns perfectly with my preferences, making it a place where comfort and relaxation coexist.

Clarity in Relationships

On the interpersonal front, there has been a conscious effort to observe relationships objectively, free from biases and preconceived notions. This newfound clarity has empowered me to make more objective and decisive decisions in personal, family, and work relationships. The commitment to continue this journey of understanding remains steadfast.

Reading Books

The joy of reading has been a constant companion throughout the year. Whether through the crisp pages of hardcopy books or the digital allure of Kindle, diverse topics have been explored. The progress in this literary adventure brings a sense of fulfillment, acknowledging that the journey of learning through books is an endless and enriching one.

Quality Travel Time

Travel has been a source of enrichment, providing new perspectives and a wholesome understanding of life. Visiting Jordan and Nepal offered experiences beyond the familiar, broadening horizons and nurturing personal growth. Gratitude extends to the timing of these travels, avoiding conflict zones and embracing the beauty of different cultures.

Writing Daily

I started writing on gparashar.com, consistently penning down my thoughts since February. This habit of expressing myself on top-of-mind topics and events has become a valuable outlet. The emphasis has not been on crafting perfect prose but on effective and precise communication. The joy derived from this practice has been immense, and as the year concludes, I am determined to carry this writing habit forward for a lifetime.

As I pen down these reflections, it's heartening to recognize the growth and blessings that have adorned the canvas of my life this year. The journey of personal development is ongoing, and with each experience, there is an opportunity to learn and evolve. Looking forward, the anticipation of continued growth and learning in the upcoming year fills me with excitement and gratitude.

Our day is buzzing with constant connectivity and the perpetual hum of social interaction, and the concept of cultivating a "lonely self" might seem counterintuitive. Yet, there's a profound strength in solitude, a muscle waiting to be flexed amidst the noise of our super-connected lives. Join me on this journey of self-discovery as we explore the art of building the lonely self muscle, finding motivation in solitude, and discovering the joy that comes from self-reliance.

The Crutch of Connectivity

In an era defined by instant messages, social media notifications, and the perpetual need to be plugged into the collective consciousness, solitude often takes a backseat. It's as if we are afraid of the silence that comes when the notifications stop chiming. But what if, within that silence, we find a strength that propels us forward rather than holds us back?

A Martian Epiphany

Reading Andy Weir's novel, "The Martian", I couldn't help but marvel at the protagonist's ability to navigate a solitary existence on Mars. It got me thinking - what if being alone wasn't about loneliness but about focus, motivation, and unbridled determination? The lonely self, as I began to see it, wasn't isolated; it was empowered.

Flexing the Lonely Self Muscle

Motivation Unearthed

Solitude provides a canvas for motivation to flourish. When there's no one around to validate your efforts, you become your own cheerleader. The lonely self muscle is about finding that internal drive that propels you forward.

Focused Productivity

Imagine the productivity that comes from a space free of interruptions. The lonely self is a powerhouse of focus, allowing you to delve deep into your projects without the constant hum of external distractions.

Driven Independence

Building the lonely self muscle is akin to fostering an unshakable independence. It's about being driven by your own goals, dreams, and aspirations, irrespective of external opinions.

We all prize constant connection, building the lonely self muscle becomes an act of rebellion. It's about discovering the richness of solitude, the strength that comes from being your own company, and the joy found in self-reliance. So, let's embrace the positive power of loneliness, flex that lonely self muscle, and revel in the beautiful symphony that is the solitude of self.

Time has a remarkable way of slipping through our fingers, often without us even realizing it. As I sit down to reflect on the past 120 days in my current rental apartment, I can't help but marvel at how quickly they have flown by. It's been a journey of both self-discovery and exploration of the space I now call home. Today, as I take a step back and think about my experiences, particularly the things that have brought me joy here: the serene fountain area, the tranquil meditation zone, and the gym in my society. Additionally, I am anticipating the upcoming winter season, where I expect a different flavour of views from my 21st-floor balcony.

Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures

Everyday, it's easy to overlook the small treasures that surround us. During these 120 days, I've learned to appreciate the simple joys that my apartment complex offers. The soothing sound of water from the nearby fountain has become my daily meditation soundtrack, a reminder to pause and be present. The meditation zone, nestled in a quiet corner, has been my sanctuary for moments of mindfulness and introspection. And the convenience of having a gym within my society has made it easier than ever to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Embracing the Heights

A new aspect for me in this apartment is its location on the 21st floor. This is a first for me, and it has opened up a whole new world of experiences. As winter approaches, I eagerly anticipate the change in scenery. With colder temperatures, I envision cozy evenings on my balcony, wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping a cup of hot tea, and gazing out at the city lights below. The views from up here promise to be even more stunning as the world transforms with the changing seasons.

Gratitude for Progress

As I reflect on these 120 days, I'm reminded of the importance of gratitude and mindfulness. Life is a journey, and we must take moments to appreciate the progress we've made and the experiences that shape us. Each day has been a step forward, an opportunity to learn and grow, and a chance to find happiness in the ordinary.

The last 120 days have been a journey filled with moments of joy, reflection, and anticipation. As winter approaches, I eagerly look forward to the new kind views from my balcony and the colder, cozier evenings it will offer. Above all, I'm grateful for the progress I've made and the reminder that life keeps moving forward.

India, the land of diversity, is a country that boasts a breathtaking blend of cultures, landscapes, and traditions. From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sun-kissed beaches of Goa, India offers an astonishing variety of experiences within its vast expanse. Despite the country's rich tapestry of offerings, I've only had the privilege of exploring a fraction of its beauty. So far, I've only journeyed through 11 states and 4 Union Territories out of the 28 states and 8 Union Territories that make up our incredible nation.

There's something undeniably captivating about wildlife documentaries that transport us to remote corners of the world, offering a front-row seat to the wonders of the natural world. Yesterday, I watched the first episode of "Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory" on Hotstar, titled "Antarctic Killer Waves." From the moment I hit play, I was hooked. This show, with its exceptional direction, cinematography, and mesmerizing voiceover, took me on an unforgettable journey through the harsh, yet mesmerizing, Antarctic landscape.

A Visual Feast

One of the first things that struck me about this show was the impeccable cinematography. The visuals were nothing short of stunning, capturing the raw beauty of the Antarctic landscape in all its glory. From sweeping shots of icy horizons to close-ups of the wildlife, every frame was a work of art. The camera work brought out the true essence of this frozen world, making me feel like I was right there alongside Bertie Gregory, the show's host and wildlife filmmaker.

A Gripping Narrative

The voiceover narration in "Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory" added depth and context to the breathtaking visuals. Bertie's storytelling skills are exceptional, and his passion for wildlife shines through in every word. He expertly weaves together the scientific facts, behavioral insights, and personal anecdotes, making the narrative both informative and emotionally engaging.

Intelligent Group Hunting

B1 killer whales, also known as Type B1 or Gerlache killer whales, are a distinct ecotype of killer whales found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. These formidable apex predators are characterized by their striking appearance, with a bold black and white coloration and a distinct white eye patch behind each eye. What makes B1 killer whales particularly fascinating is their unique hunting strategies. They are known for their intelligence and remarkable cooperation in group hunting, often targeting prey such as Weddell seals and other marine mammals. Their hunting techniques, which include wave-washing and breaking ice floes, showcase their adaptability and ingenuity in this harsh and frigid environment. B1 killer whales are a testament to the incredible diversity of wildlife that thrives in the world's most extreme and remote regions.

The B1 killer whales and their intelligent hunting techniques. I was left utterly amazed by the footage of these apex predators working together in a coordinated effort to capture their prey, the Weddell seal. They used tactics like wave-washing, where they created waves to wash the seal off ice floes, and breaking the ice to isolate their prey. The sheer intelligence and teamwork displayed by these magnificent creatures left me in awe of the wonders of nature.

Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory is an absolute must-watch for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. The combination of exceptional direction, breathtaking cinematography, and Bertie Gregory's captivating storytelling make it a show that not only educates but also entertains. The intelligent group hunting techniques of the B1 killer whales serve as a poignant reminder of the incredible adaptations and behaviors that have evolved in the natural world.

Do you remember all the countries you've been to? For many of us, the answer might be a mixed bag of yes and no. Recently, I found myself in a similar situation, realizing that I couldn't recall every trip I'd taken since college. Determined to rekindle those cherished memories, I embarked on a journey of recollection, poring over the immigration stamps on my passports dating back to my undergrad years. What I discovered was a tapestry of experiences and adventures, a testament to the beauty and diversity of our world.

Reviewing my Travel Passport

Intrigued by the prospect of rekindling my travel memories, I meticulously organized a list of countries I had visited. Each entry brought back a flood of memories, from the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serene canals of Amsterdam. Here's a curated list of the 16 countries, in addition to my homeland, India, that I've had the privilege of exploring:

  1. United States
  2. United Kingdom
  3. Sweden
  4. Denmark
  5. Netherlands
  6. Iceland
  7. United Arab Emirates
  8. Spain
  9. Germany
  10. Italy
  11. Cyprus
  12. Thailand
  13. Malaysia
  14. Vietnam
  15. Jordan
  16. Nepal

The Diversity of Our World

As I gazed upon this list, I couldn't help but marvel at the incredible diversity of our world. From the dramatic landscapes of Iceland to the vibrant culture of Thailand, each country has left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a reminder of how fortunate I am to have experienced the rich tapestry of human existence, from bustling metropolises to remote villages.

A Desire to Travel Like a Local

While reviewing my travel history, I couldn't help but feel a renewed desire to explore and experience the world more intimately, like a local. It's one thing to visit famous landmarks, but it's another to immerse oneself in the culture, cuisine, and daily life of a place. There's something truly magical about connecting with people from different backgrounds and gaining a deeper understanding of their way of life.

Gratitude for the Opportunity to Travel

In closing, I am filled with immense gratitude for the opportunities that have allowed me to embark on these incredible journeys.
