Sometimes, the most ordinary moments in life can stir up memories and reflections that take us on a journey down memory lane. Such was the case when I crossed paths with a nervous kid in the lift one early morning. His anxiousness and the way he clutched his school bag reminded me of the innocence and nervousness of childhood. I am sharing this heartwarming encounter and delve into the nostalgia it evoked, highlighting the beauty of these moments that shape us into the adults we are today.

The Lift Encounter

As I returned from my swim yesterday morning at around 7 am, I stepped into the lift and noticed a young boy, his school bag tightly gripped in his hands. He seemed restless, repeatedly looking at the floor buttons as if his gaze alone could make the lift move faster. It was evident that he was running late and in a hurry to reach his home on the 17th floor.

The lift ride was a brief yet captivating episode. I couldn't help but observe the nervous energy radiating from the young boy. His fidgety movements and darting glances painted a picture of a child on the verge of both excitement and anxiety. In that moment, I was transported back to my own childhood, recalling the familiar feeling of nervousness before an important event.

A Blast from the Past

The boy's rush to his house, frantically slamming the door open, reminded me of countless instances from my own childhood. I remembered the times when I would forget my water bottle or a crucial notebook and have to circle back home on my bicycle. As I made my way back, my father, usually tending to his plants in the garden, would assist me in finding the missing item. In those days, mobile phones were a luxury even for adults, let alone children, making it impossible to inform my parents about my forgetfulness. These incidents were not only tests of memory but also opportunities for me to learn responsibility and problem-solving.

Nostalgia and Reflection

This encounter in the lift served as a gentle reminder of the stark differences between my childhood and the present moment. The innocence and nervousness that defined those early years are often replaced by the demands and responsibilities of adulthood. Yet, it is these moments that have shaped us, allowed us to grow, and helped us step out of our shells.

The young boy's actions made me realize that life is a collection of such small yet significant moments. We should cherish them just as much as we do our moments of success. It is through these experiences that we learn, adapt, and discover our own strengths.

The encounter with the nervous kid in the lift was a poignant reminder of the beauty found in innocence and the growth that stems from facing challenges head-on. It allowed me to reflect on my own childhood days and appreciate the small moments that shaped me. As we navigate through life's ups and downs, let us treasure these instances of amusement, for they add depth and richness to our journey.

The pursuit of understanding the human mind and its intricacies has been a subject of fascination for centuries. One aspect that often perplexes us is the inclination of individuals to engage in activities that stupefy themselves. There are motivations behind this desire for self-inflicted stupefaction.

When observing his own life, a man may often notice in himself two different beings: the one is blind and physical, the other sees and is spiritual. The blind animal being eats, drinks, rests, sleeps, propagates, and moves, like a wound-up machine. The seeing, spiritual being that is bound up with the animal does nothing of itself, but only appraises the activity of the animal being; coinciding with it when approving its activity, and diverging from it when disapproving.

Seeking Escape: The Quest for Temporary Relief

People may wish to stupefy themselves as a means of seeking temporary escape from the pressures, stresses, and complexities of life. In a world filled with constant demands and obligations, the allure of mind-altering substances or behaviors can offer a respite from reality. By numbing their senses, individuals may temporarily find solace, freedom from worry, or a break from emotional turmoil.

Coping Mechanisms: Dealing with Emotional Turbulence

Self-inflicted stupefaction can also serve as a coping mechanism for individuals struggling with emotional turbulence. The intoxicating effects of substances or engaging in mind-numbing activities may provide a temporary reprieve from pain, sadness, or traumatic experiences. However, it's essential to recognize that relying on such methods as long-term solutions can hinder personal growth and exacerbate underlying issues.

Societal Influences: Cultural Norms and Peer Pressure

The desire to stupefy oneself can be influenced by societal factors and cultural norms. Peer pressure, societal expectations, or the glamorization of certain substances or behaviors through media can create a perceived sense of acceptance or belonging. Individuals may feel compelled to conform to these societal standards, leading them to engage in self-stupefying activities without fully considering the potential consequences.

The Complexity of Leo Tolstoy: A Literary Conundrum

Leo Tolstoy, renowned for his profound literary works, often presents readers with complex and layered perspectives. Understanding his true point of view can be challenging, even for seasoned readers. Tolstoy's writings, such as "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina," delve deep into human nature, morality, and the complexities of society. His exploration of philosophical concepts can leave readers grappling with multiple interpretations, making it difficult to discern his precise intentions.

All human life, we may say, consists solely of these two activities:

  1. bringing one's activities into harmony with conscience, or
  2. hiding from oneself the indications of conscience in order to be able to continue to live as before.

Personally, I have found Tolstoy's writings to be a captivating yet perplexing experience. The depth of his characters, intricate plotlines, and philosophical musings demand careful contemplation. Each reader may interpret Tolstoy's works differently, and the beauty lies in engaging in discussions, seeking insights from others, and continually revisiting his texts to unlock new perspectives.

The desire for self-inflicted stupefaction stems from a myriad of complex factors, ranging from the pursuit of temporary relief and coping mechanisms to societal influences and cultural norms. It is crucial to approach this topic with empathy and understanding, recognizing that each individual's motivations and experiences are unique. Similarly, when encountering literary geniuses like Leo Tolstoy, grappling with their true point of view can be a rewarding yet challenging endeavor. Embracing the complexity of their works allows us to explore different interpretations, engage in meaningful discussions, and expand our perspectives. Ultimately, by striving to understand the motivations behind self-stupefaction and embracing the enigmatic nature of literary greats like Tolstoy, we embark on a journey of self-reflection, empathy, and intellectual growth.

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, and it is during the challenging moments that we often find ourselves growing the most. However, there is a fine line between necessary hardships and the unnecessary pain we create for ourselves. It is crucial to recognize the difference and understand the consequences of continuously choosing the path of most resistance. Many a times we choose the path of most resistance and create unnecessary hardships in the process.

The Temptation of the Path of Most Resistance

Sometimes, without even realizing it, we find ourselves gravitating towards the path of most resistance. We mistakenly believe that the more difficult a task or situation is, the greater the reward or personal growth will be. While challenges are undoubtedly essential for our development, willingly seeking unnecessary pain can be detrimental to our well-being.

The Search for Constant Struggle

In our pursuit of personal growth, we often fall into the trap of seeking constant struggle. We believe that unless we are pushing ourselves to our limits, we are not truly evolving. This mentality can lead us to adopt a mindset where we actively seek out hardships and pain, even when they are unnecessary.

Unnecessary Hardship and its Consequences

By actively choosing unnecessary hardship, we inadvertently subject ourselves to a range of negative consequences.

  1. Burnout and Exhaustion: Constantly placing ourselves in challenging situations can lead to burnout and exhaustion. Our physical and mental well-being suffers when we constantly push ourselves without allowing for necessary rest and recovery.

  2. Diminished Enjoyment: By choosing the path of most resistance, we often miss out on the simple joys of life. Our focus becomes solely fixed on the struggle, and we fail to appreciate the beauty and simplicity that surrounds us.

  3. Strained Relationships: Unnecessary hardships can put a strain on our relationships with others. When we are constantly battling through difficulties, we may become irritable, distant, or less available to those who care about us, causing strain in our personal connections.

  4. Missed Opportunities: By actively seeking out pain and hardships, we may unknowingly overlook opportunities that could have brought us happiness and fulfillment. Our fixation on struggle blinds us to the possibilities that lie beyond our self-imposed challenges.

Finding Balance and Embracing the Path of Least Resistance

While it is important to acknowledge the value of challenges and growth, it is equally essential to find a balance and embrace the path of least resistance when appropriate. Here are a few strategies to consider:

  1. Self-reflection: Take the time to reflect on your motivations and intentions when faced with difficult choices. Ask yourself whether the struggle is necessary or if you are merely seeking pain for the sake of it.

  2. Prioritize self-care: Make self-care a priority and ensure you have ample time for rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation. Taking care of your well-being is crucial for sustainable personal growth.

  3. Recognize true opportunities: Learn to recognize genuine opportunities for growth and development. Understand that not every challenge is worth pursuing and that sometimes the path of least resistance can lead to unexpected and positive outcomes.

  4. Embrace flow and ease: Allow yourself to experience moments of flow, where tasks and activities come naturally and effortlessly. Embracing ease does not equate to stagnation but rather acknowledges that growth can happen in a state of joy and harmony.

Have you ever found yourself humming a tune from a song that you don't even understand the language of? We've all experienced those catchy tunes that stick in our heads, transcending language barriers and staying with us throughout the day. In this blog post, let's explore the phenomenon of irresistible melodies that captivate us, even if we can't comprehend the lyrics. Yesterday, during a team call over Google Meet, the mention of a Telugu song called Sir Osthara brought back memories from my time at IIMB and reminded me of the universal appeal of music that goes beyond language.

The Power of Catchy Tunes

Music has a unique way of captivating our hearts and minds, and catchy songs hold a special place in the realm of memorable melodies. These tunes have an irresistible quality that lingers in our heads, prompting us to hum or sing along, regardless of our understanding of the lyrics.

Sir Osthara - A Telugu Delight

Back in 2013, during my time at IIMB, I heard the Telugu song Sir Osthara in the room of a batchmate. Though I couldn't grasp the meaning of the lyrics, the infectious beat and rhythm of the song instantly caught my attention. Its vibrant energy was enough to make me groove along, creating a joyful atmosphere within the room. My friend kindly explained the meaning behind the lyrics, but even without understanding the words, the tune remained etched in my memory.

Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.

Punjabi Songs: Tempo, Beat, and Unfamiliar Lyrics

Another example of this phenomenon can be found in Punjabi songs. Many Punjabi tracks are known for their high tempo, energetic beats, and enthusiastic vibes. While the lyrics may be difficult to comprehend for those unfamiliar with the language, the catchy melodies and infectious rhythms still manage to captivate listeners, transcending linguistic boundaries.

The Universal Language of Music

Music is often referred to as the universal language, and it holds true in the case of catchy songs. These melodies have the power to unite people from diverse backgrounds, transcending language barriers and creating a shared experience of joy and connection. Regardless of the words being sung, we find ourselves tapping our feet, swaying to the rhythm, and joining in the chorus.

The magic of catchy songs lies in their ability to transcend language barriers and captivate our hearts and minds. Whether it's a Telugu song like Sir Osthara or a high-energy Punjabi track, the universal appeal of music touches our souls and creates an everlasting impact. So next time you find yourself humming along to a song you don't understand, embrace the power of music's universal language and let yourself be carried away by the infectious melodies that unite us all.

We all agree that time is a valuable resource but promptness is often overlooked. Whether it's in our personal or professional lives, being prompt conveys respect for others' time and demonstrates commitment to efficiency and reliability.

Respecting time of others

Being prompt is a powerful way to show respect to others. When we arrive on time for meetings, appointments, or social gatherings, we acknowledge that others' time is just as valuable as our own. By valuing punctuality, we foster a culture of respect and consideration, building stronger relationships and enhancing mutual trust and understanding.

Efficiency and Productivity

Promptness goes hand in hand with efficiency and productivity. When we are punctual, we can make the most of our time and ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner. This not only benefits us personally but also positively impacts the overall efficiency of teams, projects, and organizations. By respecting time, we contribute to a more productive and thriving environment.

Building Trust and Reliability

Consistently being prompt enhances our reputation as reliable individuals. People are more likely to trust and rely on those who consistently deliver on their commitments and respect deadlines. World rests on hope

Hope is a deeply ingrained human emotion that keeps us optimistic and motivated in the face of adversity. It allows us to envision a better future and fuels our determination to overcome challenges. While hope can be a powerful force for maintaining a positive mindset, relying solely on hope as a strategy for achieving our goals can be detrimental.

Hope vs Action

Hope, without action, is merely wishful thinking. While hope can inspire us and provide a sense of optimism, it does not guarantee any tangible results. Merely hoping for success, happiness, or fulfillment without taking proactive steps towards our goals can lead to disappointment and stagnation. To achieve meaningful outcomes, we must complement hope with intentional and consistent action.

Hope places the power of change outside of our control. By relying solely on hope, we surrender our agency and fail to take responsibility for our own circumstances. It is essential to recognize that hope alone cannot alter external factors or bring about desired outcomes. Instead, we must actively take charge of our lives, make informed decisions, and work towards our objectives with determination and perseverance.

Ignoring the writing on the wall

Humans are inherently emotional beings, and our emotions often play a significant role in the decisions we make. One such powerful emotion is hope, which can profoundly impact our decision-making process. Hope is a positive emotion that drives us to envision a desirable future and motivates us to pursue our goals. It can provide us with a sense of optimism and resilience in the face of challenges. However, relying solely on hope can lead to irrational decision making, as we may base our choices on wishful thinking rather than a realistic assessment of the situation.

When it comes to evaluating people or situations, it is vital to focus on actual actions rather than what we hope them to do. Actions speak louder than words, and they provide a more accurate reflection of someone's character, intentions, and reliability. By objectively observing and analyzing the actions of individuals or assessing the viability of a situation, we can make more sound decisions and avoid disappointment caused by misplaced hope.

By evaluating the actions of people and situations objectively, we can make more informed decisions and minimize the impact of wishful thinking. Let us embrace the power of hope while remaining grounded in reality to ensure that our decisions are guided by both our emotions and rationality.

Waving to strangers

Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness can have the most significant impact on our day. Recently, as I waved to strangers from my car on my way back from swimming on Golf Course Road Gurgaon, I experienced a delightful encounter that transported me back to my own childhood. The pure innocence and genuine happiness of a group of kids in an overcrowded school van, as they waved back with smiles and laughter, lifted my morning spirits. This heartwarming experience forces me to reflect on the power of simple gestures in brightening someone's day.

A flashback to my own childhood

As I gazed out of the car window, memories from my own childhood came flooding back. I recalled the days when I traveled to school in an auto-rickshaw, excitedly waving at passersby, hoping for a wave in return. It was a small act that brought immense joy to my young heart and made my day brighter. Little did I know that years later, the tables would turn, and I would be the one receiving that wave of joy. Today, seizing the opportunity to bring a smile to their faces, I waved with a wide grin. To my delight, the children eagerly waved back, their eyes shining with excitement and mischief. Their infectious laughter filled the air, instantly lifting my own spirits.

Power of simple gestures

In that moment, I realized the incredible impact that a simple wave and a shared moment of connection can have. The children in the school van reminded me of the joy that comes from acknowledging the presence of others, even if they are strangers. In our busy lives, we often overlook these small opportunities for genuine human connection, but they hold immense power to brighten our day and create a ripple effect of positivity. A simple wave can create a ripple effect, touching the lives of those around us and fostering a sense of community and connectedness.

In a world that often seems consumed by haste and indifference, it is essential to hold onto the spirit of innocence that children embody. Their ability to find joy in the simplest of interactions is a powerful reminder for us all. As adults, we can learn from their uninhibited expression of happiness and embrace opportunities to spread positivity through small acts of kindness, like a wave or a smile.

A wave, a smile, or a friendly greeting might seem insignificant, but they possess the power to brighten someone's day and create a ripple effect of positivity in our world.

Swimming goggles

Swimming goggles are essential accessories and designed to protect the eyes and enhance vision underwater. These specialized eyewear provide a watertight seal, preventing water from entering the eyes while allowing clear visibility. The lenses of swimming goggles are typically made from durable materials that are resistant to fogging and scratches, ensuring optimal clarity during every swim.

The experience of swimming is starkly different without goggles. It's like you don't know where you are going, what you are doing and what to expect next.

Flushing my goggles

Today, in a moment of absent-mindedness, I inadvertently sent my swimming goggles on an unexpected journey through the bathroom plumbing. After rinsing them with Dettol as a part of my weekly cleaning routine, my mind momentarily wandered. I sent the goggles spiraling into the abyss of the toilet bowl. A mix of surprise, frustration, and a touch of humor washed over me as I watched them disappear with a swift flush. It was a lighthearted reminder to remain focused even in the most mundane tasks and a comical tale to share with others. Alas, my swimming goggles became unexpected underwater explorers, navigating the intricate labyrinth of pipes, forever destined for a watery adventure in the sewage system.

Small losses

Dealing with such small losses and unexpected waste is frustrating. It is important to maintain a positive mindset and find constructive ways to address these situations. Firstly, it's crucial to acknowledge and accept the loss or waste without dwelling on it excessively. Recognize that setbacks happen to everyone and that they are part of life's unpredictable nature. Take a moment to breathe and gain perspective. Next, evaluate the situation and see if there are any lessons to be learned or preventive measures to be taken in the future. Reflecting on the experience can help you avoid similar incidents in the long run.

IPL is a rollercoaster

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a captivating spectacle that thrills fans around the world, and one of its most intriguing aspects lies in the excitement of its randomness. In each match, anything can happen, and the fortunes of teams can change in the blink of an eye. The unpredictability of the game keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating thrilling moments, unexpected twists, and nail-biting finishes. Whether it's a stunning catch, a last-minute run chase, or an unforeseen collapse, the IPL showcases the essence of sport in its purest form. The thrill of witnessing underdogs defy expectations and turn the tables on formidable opponents is a testament to the game's unpredictability. It is this very randomness that adds an element of suspense, making each match an adrenaline-filled rollercoaster ride. From the explosive power of the batsmen to the strategic brilliance of the bowlers, the IPL exemplifies the beauty of uncertainty, reminding us that in this enthralling game, anything can happen, and that is what makes it so exhilarating to watch.

Suryakumar Yadav

I watched the episode of Breakfast with Champions and got to know about Suryakumar Yadav or Sky - more about the man than the player. He is a trailblazer and a T20 specialist. This tweet by Virender Sehwag summarizes the blitz very well.

When an underdog wins, they win for everybody, because somebody gotta come through that door and break it open and make it possible.

I had just finished my dinner after a 5 km run and I had this urge to root for Suryakumar Yadav to get to his 100 on the last ball. I wonder how much listening about the struggles and desires from the first video influenced me. After all, I am not a supporter of Mumbai Indians or an avid cricket follower. Sky, is by no means, an underdog. He is the best rated T20 Batsman in the World ICC rankings as of today. But the way he explains his inner anguish and struggles to get to this spot, makes you want to root for him.

Rooting the underdog

There is a special kind of joy and satisfaction that comes with rooting for the underdog. When the odds are stacked against them, and their chances of success seem slim, it ignites a fire within us to support and rally behind them. We are drawn to their determination, resilience, and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. There is a sense of hope and inspiration in witnessing an underdog rise against all expectations, defying the skeptics and proving that anything is possible. We find ourselves emotionally invested, eagerly cheering them on, and celebrating their victories as if they were our own. Rooting for the underdog reminds us that success is not solely defined by statistics or rankings, but by the sheer will and belief to overcome obstacles. It teaches us the value of perseverance, the importance of embracing challenges, and the potential for greatness that lies within each of us. So, as we witness the underdog defy the odds, we are reminded that dreams can be achieved, and that sometimes, the most remarkable victories come from those who are least expected to triumph.

Morning routine

In time away from Gurgaon, the first thing to be disrupted is the morning routine. It is primarily because of two reasons - late nights with family/friends and absence of a go-to swimming pool in Jaipur.

I have a new found respect for an early morning schedule. A late morning schedule is inferior compared to an early morning schedule for the following reasons:

  1. If you get up early, you get a lot more time for yourself and to do things you enjoy.
  2. Mornings are quieter and calmer. In summers, the temperature is better too.
  3. Meditating in mornings helps me in being mindful. Evening meditations aren't as satisfying for me.
  4. It is a lot easier to organize and plan your day in the morning focusing on the most important activities.

Back to routine after a week

The whole of the last week was spent in Jaipur and I ended up getting up much later than the usual 5:30 am. I am a creature of habit and the morning routine of swim, stretch, meditation is something I missed dearly. It feels nice to be back to the routine of ending the day by 10pm and reading for 30 minutes each night.

The second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half.
