In the fast-paced, ever-evolving world we live in, it's natural for us to focus on the present. After all, our day-to-day lives demand our attention, and the future beckons with its promise of progress. But have you ever stopped to consider how your view of the past, and the phenomenon known as presentism, might be affecting your understanding of history and its impact on the world today? This article takes its inspiration from one of Bill Maher's thought-provoking segments, New Rule: A Unified Theory of Wokeness. In this insightful piece, Maher eloquently addresses the issue of presentism that the United States is currently grappling with. Maher's commentary sheds light on the challenges posed by presentism in contemporary society, particularly in the context of discussions surrounding political correctness, cultural sensitivity, and historical perspectives. Building upon the ideas presented in Maher's segment, this blog delves deeper into the concept of presentism, examining its implications on our perception of history and its relevance to critical issues like racism, women's rights, and societal reforms.

What is Presentism?

Presentism is a cognitive bias that involves interpreting historical events and people through the lens of contemporary attitudes, values, and beliefs. In essence, it's the tendency to judge the past by today's standards. While it's only natural to view history from our own perspective, presentism can distort our understanding of the past and hinder our ability to appreciate the challenges and progress made by previous generations.

Scientific Studies on Presentism

Numerous scientific studies have explored the impact of presentism on our perception of history. These studies reveal intriguing insights into how our contemporary viewpoints can shape our understanding of the past:

  1. Temporal Lensing Effect: Research has shown that people tend to perceive historical events as more predictable than they actually were at the time. This hindsight bias can lead to oversimplifications of complex historical situations.

  2. Changing Morality Standards: Studies have demonstrated that our moral standards and values evolve over time. What may have been acceptable in the past may be considered morally reprehensible today, such as historical attitudes towards racism, sexism, and discrimination.

  3. Selective Attention: People often focus on specific events or figures from history while neglecting others. This selective attention can skew our understanding of the past and perpetuate historical myths and misconceptions.

Presentism and Its Impact on Our Perception of Past Generations

Now, let's explore how presentism affects our perception of past generations, particularly in relation to critical issues like racism, women's rights, and societal reforms:

  1. Racism: When we view historical figures through a presentist lens, we may oversimplify their actions and motivations. It's essential to recognize that societal norms regarding race and ethnicity have evolved significantly over time. While some historical figures may have held racist views, it's crucial to consider the broader context of their era and the progress made by subsequent generations in combating racism.

  2. Women's Rights: The struggle for women's rights has evolved over centuries. Presentism can lead us to underestimate the challenges faced by early advocates for women's suffrage and gender equality. By understanding the historical context, we can appreciate the courage and determination of those who fought for women's rights.

  3. Societal Reforms: Presentism can also cloud our perception of societal reforms, such as civil rights movements and labor rights struggles. It's important to acknowledge the incremental progress made by previous generations, even if their methods or beliefs differ from our own.

While it's natural to view history through the lens of our own time, presentism can limit our understanding of the past and hinder our appreciation of the progress made by previous generations.

By being aware of this cognitive bias and engaging in historical context, we can develop a more nuanced and empathetic perspective on history. This, in turn, can lead to greater insight into contemporary challenges and a deeper appreciation for the resilience and progress of humanity over time.

After a prolonged hiatus from my daily routine, it's a refreshing feeling to get back to the usual life. I find myself eagerly looking forward to resuming regular activities like swimming and engaging in 5km runs a couple of times a week. I also intend to huddle together and reorient myself towards work.

The Joy of Swimming

Swimming has lately been a favorite activity of mine. The cool water against my skin, the rhythmic strokes, and the sense of weightlessness create an unparalleled sense of relaxation. Gurgaon offers a range of swimming pools, both public and private, where enthusiasts like me can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of swimming. I look forward to the soothing laps in the pool, which have been dearly missed during these challenging times.

Rediscovering the Runner's High

For avid runners, there's nothing quite like the thrill of a good run. Whether it's the brisk morning air or the sense of accomplishment after completing a run, there's a unique high that comes with this exercise. It's a great way to not only stay fit but also explore the beauty of the city.

Home - A Sanctuary of Comfort

Amidst all the excitement of returning to my fitness routine, home remains a constant source of comfort. Over the past year, it has transformed into a multifaceted space that accommodates work, relaxation, and recreation. The familiarity of home, the cozy corner where I curl up with a book, and the aroma of home-cooked meals are irreplaceable. In a world that's constantly changing, home remains a sanctuary of stability and comfort.

September proved to be a month of incredible journeys, taking me to the enchanting landscapes of Jordan and the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, Nepal. These two trips, one spanning 8 days in Jordan and the other a brief 3-day visit to Nepal, were a reminder of the transformative power of travel and the importance of carving out time for exploration in a busy entrepreneur's life. As I go back to Gurgaon, I reflect on the profound experiences and newfound perspectives that these trips have brought.

The Jordanian Odyssey

My 8-day adventure in Jordan was nothing short of magical. From the mesmerizing landscapes of Wadi Rum to the ancient wonders of Petra, each day was a revelation of history, culture, and natural beauty. The 4x4 desert car tour in Wadi Rum, the breathtaking sunset, and the unique experience of staying in desert camps under the starlit sky were highlights that will forever be etched in my memory. The warmth of the people and the flavors of Jordanian cuisine left an indelible mark on my heart. Jordan, with its rich history and breathtaking scenery, offered a fresh perspective on the world and its wonders.

The Kathmandu Sojourn

Following the Jordanian adventure, a quick 3-day trip to Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, was like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of culture and spirituality. The sightseeing, the enchanting views from Swoyambhu Mahachaitya, and the delightful experiences in Thamel brought a sense of serenity and wonder. The juxtaposition of ancient temples with bustling markets showcased the city's dynamic spirit. Nepal, with its unique blend of tradition and modernity, expanded my horizons and added a new layer to my perspective.

The Entrepreneur's Dilemma

As an entrepreneur, carving out time for travel can be a daunting task. The responsibilities and demands of running a business often seem unrelenting. However, these two trips served as a powerful reminder of the importance of taking a step back, disconnecting from the daily grind, and exploring the world. Travel isn't just about leisure; it's about gaining new perspectives, fostering creativity, and recharging the soul. It's a necessary investment in personal and professional growth.

The Necessity of Travel

In a world driven by schedules and deadlines, it's easy to neglect the profound benefits of travel. Yet, these adventures in Jordan and Nepal have reinforced the notion that travel is an essential part of life. It opens our eyes to diverse cultures, fuels our curiosity, and enriches our understanding of the world. It reminds us that there is so much more to discover beyond our everyday routines.

September's adventures in Jordan and Nepal have left me with a newfound perspective and vision. They have emphasized the importance of making time for travel, despite the challenges that may arise. Each journey, whether long or short, is an opportunity to expand our horizons, connect with new people, and deepen our appreciation for the beauty of the world. As I return to the entrepreneur's world with renewed energy and insight, I am grateful for the invaluable lessons these trips have imparted.

In the realm of personal growth and high performance, there exists an intricate interplay between two aspects of our selves - Self 1 and Self 2. These internal characters, as introduced by Timothy Gallwey in his book The Inner Game of Tennis, hold the key to unlocking exceptional achievements in sports, art, business, and beyond.

Understanding Self 1 and Self 2

In the journey of self-improvement, it's crucial to understand the roles of Self 1 and Self 2. Self 1 is the analytical, critical, and often self-doubting voice that tends to interfere with our natural abilities. This inner critic is quick to judge, overthink, and micromanage our actions. On the other hand, Self 2 represents our intuitive, unburdened self that effortlessly executes tasks when given the chance.

High performance is often characterized by the harmonious relationship between these two selves. It's about learning to quieten the nagging voice of Self 1, allowing Self 2's intuitive brilliance to shine through. This delicate balance is what separates the extraordinary from the average.

Dominance of Self 2: A Hallmark of High Performers

Whether in the realm of sports, art, or business, high-performing individuals have mastered the art of harnessing Self 2's intuition. Think about renowned athletes who seem to make split-second decisions effortlessly, artists who create masterpieces without overthinking, and business leaders who trust their gut instincts in pivotal moments. These individuals have nurtured their connection with Self 2, enabling them to perform at their peak.

Early Age Discovery and Growth

What's fascinating is that those who tap into the wisdom of Self 2 early in life, particularly before the age of 40, have a unique advantage. Discovering and embracing their intuition at a younger age allows them to build upon this foundation and grow exponentially. The lessons from Self 2 become ingrained, shaping their approach to challenges, decisions, and opportunities.

By cultivating self-awareness and nurturing their intuition, these individuals are more likely to make authentic choices that align with their core strengths and values. They develop an unwavering sense of self, which in turn fosters confidence and resilience in the face of adversity.

Your Path to High Performance

Whether you're an athlete striving for greatness, an artist seeking to express your creativity, or a business professional aiming for outstanding achievements, understanding Self 1 and Self 2 is your compass. Embrace the wisdom of Self 2 by:

1. Cultivating Self-Awareness: Take time to observe your inner dialogue. Recognize when Self 1 is hindering your progress and learn to let go of self-criticism.

2. Trusting Intuition: Make space for your intuitive insights. Trust your gut feelings and practice making decisions based on your inner wisdom.

3. Fostering Mindfulness: Stay present in the moment. Mindfulness empowers you to focus on your actions rather than getting lost in overthinking.

4. Learning from Experience: Reflect on moments when you trusted your intuition and reaped rewards. Let these experiences reinforce your connection with Self 2.

In the grand tapestry of high performance, Self 1 and Self 2 are the threads that weave together. Embrace the power of intuition, cultivate self-awareness, and discover the extraordinary potential within you. Whether you're 25 or 45, the journey towards peak performance starts with understanding and embracing your inner game.

In the intricate tapestry of human emotions, one thread stands out for its sheer universality and transformative power - admiration. From the moment we are born, the desire to be admired is etched into our very essence. It's a profound need that influences our thoughts, actions, and relationships, shaping the very fabric of our lives.

Innate and Universal Craving for Admiration

The need for admiration is a fundamental aspect of the human experience. It's encoded in our DNA, and it transcends cultural and societal boundaries. From early childhood, we seek validation and approval from our caregivers, signaling our first connection to the world beyond ourselves. As we grow, this need extends to friends, family, colleagues, and even society at large.

Admiration affects your Subconscious

Admiration, often operating beneath our conscious awareness, has a profound impact on our emotional well-being. It's not just about receiving a compliment; it's about feeling valued and acknowledged for who we are and what we contribute. Positive feedback triggers the release of dopamine, the brain's "feel-good" neurotransmitter, enhancing our mood and reinforcing our positive behavior.

Boosting souls with words

Consider the last time you received heartfelt words of admiration from a loved one, a friend, or a colleague. Remember the surge of warmth and confidence that coursed through you? Words of admiration have an incredible ability to uplift and inspire. They serve as a mirror reflecting our best qualities, igniting a sense of self-assuredness that radiates outward.

Nurturing Relationships and Fostering Growth

Admiration isn't merely a self-serving pursuit; it's a catalyst for meaningful connections and personal growth. When we admire others, we cultivate empathy, respect, and understanding. By acknowledging the strengths and talents of those around us, we foster an environment of positivity and collaboration.

The Ripple Effect: Spreading Admiration

In a world that can sometimes feel divided and cynical, embracing the power of admiration can be revolutionary. Imagine a society where people genuinely celebrated each other's achievements and virtues. By taking a moment to recognize the good qualities in those around us, we create a ripple effect of positivity that transcends boundaries.

Celebrating the Beauty of Admiration

In the grand tapestry of human emotions, admiration stands as a vibrant thread that weaves us together. It's a universal language that bridges differences and nourishes souls. From childhood dreams to adult aspirations, the need for admiration accompanies us, shaping our journeys and reminding us of our intrinsic worth. So, let's celebrate the beauty of admiration - the unspoken words that brighten our days, the gestures that elevate spirits, and the connections that enrich our lives.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it's easy to slip into a routine where each day feels like a replay of the previous one. We wake up, go through the motions, and before we know it, the day is over. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as "life on autopilot," can be both comforting and monotonous. My last week has been an example of life on autopilot, with a predictable schedule involving morning swims, work, and evening runs. Finding novelty in life in important, our surroundings and circumstances impact our experiences, and the notion of settling into new environments.

The Autopilot Week

The past week has been a blur of repetitive activities, with my alarm blaring at the crack of dawn, signaling the start of another day. My mornings have been consistent, beginning with a refreshing swim to invigorate my senses and kickstart the day. The workdays are characterized by a series of tasks and deadlines, where I find myself navigating through projects almost automatically. Even my evenings follow the same pattern - a therapeutic run to unwind and clear my mind. As I lay down to sleep, I couldn't help but ponder if I was merely going through the motions without truly savoring each moment.

Seeking Novelty

It's natural for anyone to crave novelty and excitement in their daily lives. While routines offer stability and a sense of control, the absence of novelty can lead to feelings of stagnation and monotony. Missing novelty can be attributed to several factors, including the predictability of our surroundings, the weather's impact on our activities, and the people we interact with daily. As the days blend into one another, the sense of adventure that comes with encountering new experiences seems distant.

Comfort in New Surroundings

On a brighter note, the last few weeks have marked a significant change in my life as I moved to a new house. Initially, the unfamiliarity of the surroundings and the adjustment period posed challenges. However, as time passed, I found myself becoming more comfortable with my new environment. The walls now hold cherished memories, and the neighborhood feels like a community. It's a reminder that we humans have an incredible ability to adapt and find comfort in new circumstances.

Settling into All Environments

Reflecting on my adaptation to the new house, I realized that this ability to settle extends to all aspects of life. Regardless of the circumstances, we tend to adjust and find comfort in our surroundings. While change can be intimidating, it also presents an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By embracing new environments and experiences, we break free from the chains of autopilot living and open ourselves to the richness of life.

Life on autopilot can offer a sense of security and stability, but it's crucial to strike a balance between routine and novelty. The last week has been an eye-opener, reminding me to cherish every moment and seek out new experiences to enrich my journey. As we navigate through the seasons of life, let us remember that we have the power to find comfort in any circumstance and embrace the beauty of the unknown. By breaking free from the monotonous patterns, we can awaken our senses, find joy in the simplest of things, and truly live life to the fullest.

In today's digital age, social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter have become an integral part of our lives. They connect us to friends, family, and the wider world, providing a constant stream of information and entertainment. However, behind the façade of connectivity lies a darker truth - the rise of internal mimetic desires and their impact on our self-perception.

Understanding Mimetic Desires: The Human Urge to Imitate

Mimetic desires refer to the innate human tendency to imitate others. These desires are not limited to material possessions or aspirations but extend to every aspect of life, including personality traits, relationships, and achievements. While some degree of imitation is natural for learning and social bonding, the digital age has amplified and distorted these desires.

Mimetic desire is a concept that assigns value to things based on what others want, rather than any objective qualities. Internal models of desire, such as peers, can be measured against for comparison

The Illusion of Perfection: Social Media's Role

Platforms like Instagram and Twitter present a curated version of people's lives, highlighting their best moments, achievements, and possessions. As users, we are bombarded with images and stories that trigger our mimetic desires, leading us to compare our lives with the seemingly perfect lives of others. Despite being conscious of the facade, we find ourselves drawn into a spiral of self-doubt and feeling inadequate.

The value of objects is not objective—it’s subjective. And that subjective value is determined mimetically, based on our relationships with others.

The Erosion of Conscious Awareness

While we might start our social media journey with a clear understanding that people present a selective, often exaggerated version of their lives, over time, this thought gets buried under a flood of seemingly perfect posts. Gradually, we lose sight of reality and become vulnerable to feelings of worthlessness, as our self-perception becomes intertwined with social media's portrayal of perfection.

Shaking Ourselves Out of the Social Media Hangover

To combat the negative impact of social media on our self-perception, it is crucial to develop mindfulness and self-awareness. Mindfulness involves being fully present and aware of our thoughts and emotions without judgment. By cultivating mindfulness, we can observe our mimetic desires as they arise and consciously choose not to succumb to them.

Embracing Authenticity and Real Connections

It's essential to remind ourselves that social media represents a carefully crafted façade. Instead of seeking validation through likes and comments, let's focus on building authentic connections with real friends and loved ones. Engaging in genuine conversations and shared experiences can help us break free from the cycle of comparison and insecurity.

Books to Foster Mindfulness and Overcome Social Media's Lack of Focus

  1. "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle: This transformative book emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment and detaching from external judgments.

  2. "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport: A practical guide to reclaiming focus and intention in a hyper-connected world, this book provides valuable insights on reducing social media usage.

  3. "The Attention Revolution" by Alan Wallace: Offering mindfulness practices and techniques, this book helps improve focus and attention in a distracted digital landscape.

In conclusion, the rise of mimetic desires in the age of social media demands a conscious effort to remain mindful and self-aware. By acknowledging the illusion of perfection perpetuated on these platforms, we can liberate ourselves from the negative impact and focus on cultivating authentic connections and a healthier sense of self-worth.

Ah, history, it never fails to surprise us with its fascinating twists and turns! And one such twist involves the Genghis Khan, the fearsome Mongol warrior who lived in the 1100s. We've all read tales of his conquests in history books, but did you know that his genetic legacy has left an indelible mark on a massive chunk of modern humanity? Yup, you heard it right! In a quirky turn of events, a paper titled (The Genetic Legacy of the Mongols)[https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1180246/pdf/AJHGv72p717.pdf] published in March 2003, spilled the beans on how Genghis Khan's DNA connects him to a significant percentage of people walking this earth today.

The Khan's Family Tree

Picture this: Genghis Khan, the conqueror extraordinaire, ruling over the vast Mongol Empire for around 65 years. With his mighty sword and strategic brilliance, he expanded his territory like a boss. But little did he know that his most enduring conquests were not merely of lands but of genes!

According to the genetic study, Genghis Khan passed down his Y-chromosome to his descendants, and boy, did it spread like wildfire! Researchers found that a jaw-dropping 0.5% of the male population alive today share a common Y-chromosome linked back to the Khan himself. That's roughly 16 million men strutting around with the mighty genes of the great Khan! Now, if that doesn't make you wonder about your family tree, I don't know what will!

Genghis Khan: The Genetic Rockstar

So, how on earth did Genghis Khan manage to make such a massive impact on human DNA? Well, you see, Khan was quite the charismatic lad back in the day. He had an eye for the ladies, and he wasn't shy about it. As he galloped across the vast steppes and conquered new territories, he left a trail of admirers (let's call them Khan's Fans) who couldn't resist his warlord charm.

And voilà! Centuries later, that charm has translated into a breathtakingly vast genetic legacy. It turns out that Khan's Fans passed down his Y-chromosome through generations, spreading far and wide, even reaching places like Central Asia, parts of Europe, and, brace yourself, India!

When the Mongols Met India

Now, let's talk about the Mongols' invasion of India, a clash of civilizations that had a genetic impact lasting to this day. When the Mongols rode their horses into the Indian subcontinent, they encountered diverse cultures, spices that made their taste buds dance, and, you guessed it, potential admirers!

As the Mongols mingled with the local population, they formed connections that transcend time. Modern-day Indians, particularly those hailing from regions like the Punjab and Rajasthan, carry traces of the Mongol legacy in their DNA. So, next time you savor that delectable butter chicken or indulge in some mouthwatering Rajasthani delicacies, remember that you might just be enjoying a little bit of Genghis Khan's influence on your taste buds!

So, the next time you meet someone new, take a moment to ponder: could we be long-lost genetic cousins, all linked back to the one and only Genghis Khan? Remember, in the vast tapestry of human DNA, we're all connected in some way or another. It's a small world, after all, and Genghis Khan's genetic legacy proves it!

In late February 2023, I started a unique social experiment, vowing to share my daily fitness statistics of swimming and running with my social network on Instagram and Whatsapp. For 150 consecutive days, I diligently posted updates on my progress, occasionally supplementing them with personal pictures. This experiment offered fascinating insights into the dynamics of social media and its impact on both content creators and consumers. Today, I share my learnings from the experiment, highlighting the addictive nature of daily posting, the role of dopamine, offline conversations, and the valuable encouragement received from a few friends. Moreover, I plan to observe my own behavior as I step away from posting on social media while continuing my daily blogging journey.

The Experiment Unveiled: Learnings and Observations

1. Content Consumption vs. Production

One of the most eye-opening discoveries during this experiment was the vast disparity between content consumption and production in the realm of social media. It became evident that people tend to consume content far more than they contribute to it. My daily fitness updates garnered significant attention and engagement, with friends and acquaintances expressing interest in my progress. This observation highlights the importance of acknowledging and appreciating content creators who invest time and effort into sharing valuable information and experiences.

2. The Addictive Nature of Daily Posting

As the days progressed, I found myself becoming increasingly invested in the habit of daily posting. Sharing my fitness stats became a ritual that provided a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. This phenomenon can be attributed to the "dopamine kick" associated with receiving positive feedback and engagement from friends and followers. The desire to maintain this sense of achievement became a driving force behind my daily posts.

3. Offline Conversations Sparked by Online Posts

My consistent daily updates sparked numerous conversations offline among friends and family. It was heartening to learn that my posts inspired others to discuss their fitness goals and share their journeys with me. The experiment served as a catalyst for meaningful discussions beyond the virtual realm, reinforcing the potential of social media to connect individuals and foster real-life interactions.

4. Encouragement and Motivation from a few

Among the many who viewed my daily fitness updates, a handful of friends took the initiative to encourage and motivate me to persevere in my fitness pursuits. Their support was a powerful reminder of the positive impact we can have on each other's lives through genuine engagement and kindness. These five individuals served as valuable pillars of encouragement throughout the experiment.

Encouragement and Motivation

Moving Forward: Observing My Behavior

As the 150-day mark of my social experiment approaches, I have decided to take a step back from daily posting on social media. However, my journey does not end here. I will continue my daily blogging efforts to share my experiences, insights, and progress in my fitness journey and other aspects of life. The 150-day social experiment exploring the sharing of daily fitness stats on social media has been a remarkable journey. It provided insights into content consumption, the allure of daily posting, the role of dopamine, and the potential of online interactions to stimulate offline conversations. Moreover, the encouragement and motivation from a few friends made this experiment even more meaningful. As I transition away from daily social media posting and focus on blogging, I look forward to observing my own behavior and deepening my understanding of the dynamics between the digital and real worlds.
