Managing emotions

Pesky little disappointments seem to pop up when we least expect them. Maybe you didn't get that promotion you were hoping for, or you could not grab a tea because of other's not preferring it. Whatever it is, fret not, my friend! Dealing with small disappointments with style and grace is the way to go.

Embrace the "Oopsie Daisy" Attitude

Life has a funny way of throwing curveballs at us, and small disappointments are like those cute little bloopers that keep things interesting. Instead of dwelling on them, try adopting the "oopsie daisy" attitude. Laugh it off, shrug your shoulders, and say, "Well, that didn't go as planned, but hey, that's life!" Remember, laughter is the best medicine, even for disappointment.

Find the Silver Lining

very cloud has a silver lining, my friend, and disappointments are no different. When life hands you a lemon-flavored disappointment, squeeze out that silver lining and make some zesty lemonade. Didn't get that promotion? Maybe it's a sign that an even more amazing opportunity is waiting just around the corner. The key is to look for the lessons and hidden blessings in every disappointment. Trust me, they're there!

Shake It Off, Shake It Off

As our good friend Taylor Swift says, "Shake it off!" Sometimes, the best way to deal with a small disappointment is to channel your inner dancing queen and shake off that negative energy. Crank up your favorite feel-good tunes, bust out your dance moves, and shake away those disappointments like nobody's watching. Trust me, it's impossible to stay disappointed when you're getting down to the beat!

Small disappointments may try to rain on your parade, but armed with these tips, you'll be twirling your umbrella and dancing in the rain. Embrace the oopsie daisies, find those silver linings, treat yourself like a rockstar, lean on your support squad, shake off the negativity, and keep dreaming big!

Attention and focus

Attention and focus are two cognitive processes that are essential for achieving success in any task, whether it is academic, professional, or personal. Attention refers to the ability to direct one's focus towards a specific stimulus or task, while focus refers to the sustained attention that allows an individual to remain engaged with that stimulus or task for an extended period of time.

Attention and focus are closely related, as the ability to sustain focus on a task requires the individual to maintain their attention on that task. Without attention, focus becomes difficult to achieve, and the individual may find themselves easily distracted or unable to stay on task.

Factors for Attention and focus

There are several factors that can impact an individual's ability to maintain attention and focus. For example, stress, fatigue, and lack of motivation can all make it difficult for an individual to stay engaged with a task. Additionally, external distractions, such as noise or visual stimuli, can also make it challenging to maintain focus.

Strategies to improve Attention and focus

Fortunately, there are several strategies that individuals can use to improve their attention and focus. One of the most effective strategies is mindfulness meditation, which involves focusing one's attention on the present moment and letting go of distracting thoughts. Research has shown that regular mindfulness practice can improve attention and focus, as well as reduce stress and anxiety.

Another strategy for improving attention and focus is to break tasks down into smaller, more manageable chunks. This can help prevent feelings of overwhelm and allow the individual to focus on one small task at a time, rather than trying to tackle a larger task all at once.

In addition to these strategies, there are several lifestyle factors that can impact an individual's ability to maintain attention and focus. For example, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise can all help improve cognitive function and increase focus.

Overall, attention and focus are essential cognitive processes that play a critical role in our ability to achieve success in all areas of life. By practicing mindfulness, breaking tasks down into smaller chunks, and prioritizing healthy lifestyle habits, individuals can improve their ability to maintain attention and focus, allowing them to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Autopilot

Have you ever had a day where everything just seemed to fly by without much thought or conscious effort? It's as if you were on autopilot, going through the motions without much awareness or engagement with the world around you. Today was one such day for me. On my drive back to home, I got thinking - what happened today?

The downside of going through the day on autopilot is that I miss out on the richness and depth of experiences. When I am not fully present and engaged with the world around, I might miss out on opportunities for growth, learning, and connection with others. I felt a sense of emptiness or dissatisfaction at the end of the day, as if I didn't accomplish much or make the most of my time.

High switching costs

Some days do finish on autopilot due to my habits, routines, and mental state. While this can be a comfortable and familiar way to move through my days, it can also limit my growth and engagement with the world around. By intentionally disrupting my routines and cultivating mindfulness, I can break out of autopilot mode and experience life with greater awareness, curiosity, and joy.

Day with lots of arguments

We all have days where things just don't seem to go our way, and it feels like we're constantly getting into arguments with people around us. Whether it's a disagreement with a coworker, a fight with a friend, or a shouting match with a family member, dealing with days with lots of arguments can be incredibly draining and stressful.

Dealing with days with lots of arguments can be tough, but by staying calm, practicing active listening, looking for common ground, setting boundaries, and taking care of yourself, one can get through even the toughest of days.

Focus is hard

We check our phone around 150 times a day (~ 10 times every hour awake) and half of our phone time is reserved for Social Media

My observations have been:

  1. Days with significant slots of shallow focus are less satisfying.
  2. Consciously solving a single or atomic problem for 1.5 hours is tough but very effective.
  3. In startups, you choose the problem statement and the work towards the solve. Focusing on a niche market or problem or user is is tough but very effective.
  4. Meditation helps improve focus and observing your own dopamine loops helps break addictions.

Since yesterday, I have been distracted with adhoc, abrupt problem situations, firefighting, pokes from competitors. Such days happen every now and then, but it is always nice to fight distractions and focus back on the short term (i.e. weekly) and long term goals (i.e. 1 year).

Focus can be engineered

I try to engineer focus during the day by doing the following:

  • List my most important task(s) of the day and check in the afternoon if I am making progress
  • Choosing my environment - office space, temperature, coffee at the right time of the day
  • Music on Spotify during the day if you want to zone out the external noises
  • Sales calls batched together to avoid being switch on and off

I am missing on some effective things even after repeated reminders:

  • 15 minutes walk after lunch - helps increase focus after lunch time.
  • Recap of the day after the work is completed i.e. a restore point for the next day.
  • Cutting short time sinks or black holes i.e. anticipating conversations or events which will be an utter waste of time.

Limited time we have

Everyone has the same time in the day. Passage of time is a crucial aspect of our perception of reality. Some basic facts which I tend to forget regularly:

  • A year is equal to ~8800 hours
  • I sleep ~2600 hours (30% of the time)

The remaining 6200 hours are the experience of reality. Relishing the awake hours is what brings the most joy, satisfaction, happiness to me.

Attention

Life on autopilot is default for us with the devices, worries. Giving full attention to the act in hand is difficult but important. It is what makes me feel in the moment and a sense of completeness. A few things I have felt in state of full attention:

  1. During conversations about work, I add more value and solve problems better.
  2. During time with loved ones, I see their perspective better and feel more empathy.
  3. In a day, I feel better if I am spending time mindfully instead of being stuck in busy bandwagon or infinity pools.

Being careful with time

We are all influenced by external forces while lead us to commit time to topics, problems and activities. Mindfully spending your time is the biggest gift you give to yourself on a daily basis.

The lapses in being mindful happen in chunks. I fall off from this mindset for a full day or week. It usually happens along with travel or change of environment. Attention and time become more important and having a routine to reflect upon it is something I would like to include in my schedule.

Daily Content Stream

It is estimated that we consume roughly 34 gb data and information a day and it has been increase exponentially. If we are not mindful, no wonder we forget stuff. Be it forgetting the airpods, that happened this morning for me or forgetting your friend's birthday. We need to consciously choose what we consume to improve daily life.

What content do I consume frequently?

  1. Music via Spotify
  2. Netflix and YouTub on TV
  3. Reading via paperback or Kindle
  4. Push marketing like advertising in lift lobby, on internet

Saying No

A few areas which I have struggled to completely streamline are:

  • Giving up on my TV, I successfully gave up the tablet in January 2023. I gave it to my mother.
  • Fine tuning Spotify to suggest music which drives me to a flow state
