Unexpected challenges

Life often throws unexpected challenges our way, testing our resilience and determination. Apoorva Pathak, my cousin, faced an unimaginable struggle when she met with a road accident in 2018, resulting in a spinal injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She endured innumerable hardships and struggles on her path to recovery, and I would like to focus on her remarkable transformation from a devastated medical student to a resilient and accomplished individual.

Brutal accident

1. Devastating Setback

The accident not only left Apoorva physically impaired but also shattered her dreams of becoming a doctor. As an aspiring MBBS student, she was full of enthusiasm and hope for the future. The sudden loss of mobility and independence brought her world crashing down. The transition from an able-bodied individual to someone with paraplegia was undoubtedly one of the most difficult phases of her life.

2. Physical and Emotional Challenges

Apoorva's spinal injury required intensive medical care and prolonged rehabilitation. She had to undergo multiple surgeries and endure grueling physiotherapy sessions to regain some functionality. Beyond the physical pain, she also grappled with emotional turmoil, experiencing feelings of frustration, helplessness, and even depression. The loss of her dreams added to her emotional burden, leaving her feeling lost and uncertain about her future.

3. Adapting to a New Reality

Despite the immense challenges, Apoorva showed remarkable resilience and determination. With the support of family, she gradually learned to adapt to her new reality. She embraced assistive devices and technologies that helped her regain some independence, such as a wheelchair and specialized equipment for mobility. Through sheer determination, she began to build a new life, accepting her circumstances while refusing to let them define her.

4. Pursuing a New Path

Rather than succumbing to despair, Apoorva decided to redirect her focus towards a different academic pursuit. She made the courageous choice to switch from medicine to pursue a degree in the humanities. This shift allowed her to explore new areas of interest and provided her with a fresh perspective on life. Apoorva's decision to study BA in Rampur marked the beginning of a transformative journey that showcased her indomitable spirit.

Triumph and Recognition

In 2023, Apoorva's unwavering dedication and perseverance bore fruit. She not only completed her BA with distinction but was also recognized as the college topper in her new course. This achievement not only symbolizes her academic excellence but also highlights her extraordinary determination to overcome obstacles. Apoorva's journey from the depths of despair to academic success serves as a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment to self-improvement.

My sister's story is a powerful testament to the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The road accident that left her paralyzed brought her dreams to a halt, but it could not dampen her indomitable spirit. Through her unwavering determination and resilience, Apoorva has not only overcome physical and emotional hardships but has also excelled academically. Her remarkable transformation from a devastated medical student to the college topper in her new course is a true inspiration for me. Apoorva teaches me that with perseverance, hard work, and a positive mindset, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges that life presents us.

Health insurance

In India, the importance of health insurance cannot be overstated. With rising healthcare costs and the uncertainty of unexpected medical emergencies, having a robust health insurance policy has become an essential safeguard for individuals and families. Basic tests such as HbA1c, BP and cholesterol conducted regularly will give you all the risk signals.

Health insurance acts as a financial safety net, ensuring that individuals and families can access quality healthcare without incurring exorbitant expenses. It provides coverage for hospitalization, medical treatments, and diagnostic tests, easing the financial burden on policyholders. Health insurance offers peace of mind, knowing that one's health and well-being are protected, and enables timely access to necessary medical care.

Absence of health insurance

The absence of health insurance can pose significant challenges for individuals and families. Without insurance coverage, medical expenses can quickly drain savings and lead to a financial crisis. Many people may resort to inadequate or delayed treatment due to financial constraints, jeopardizing their health and well-being. Health insurance acts as a vital buffer, ensuring that necessary medical interventions are not compromised due to financial limitations.

Annual health checkups

To ensure the well-being of policyholders, insurance companies often conduct annual health checkups. These checkups serve multiple purposes, including assessing the overall health status of individuals, identifying potential risk factors, and establishing a baseline for future comparisons. Insurance companies use this data to understand the health profile of their customers and devise strategies to enhance their experience, such as offering wellness programs or personalized recommendations for healthier lifestyles.

Who collects the sample

My insurer is Aditya Birla and the test was conducted via Visit Health Private Limited. They seem to operate on a similar model for corporates and insurers as ConnectedH. I had talked about it in Conversation with a startup founder. Visit also hosted the final report via a link and communicated with me via email. Overall a neat solution!

Health tests

During annual health checkups, insurance companies typically conduct basic tests that provide valuable insights into an individual's health. Tests such as HbA1c and cholesterol levels help evaluate diabetes risk and cardiovascular health. Although these tests may seem basic, they serve as important indicators of overall well-being. Elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and random blood sugar levels, even slightly above optimal, can signify the need for lifestyle modifications and further evaluation.

If your recent health checkup, like mine, revealed slightly elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and random blood sugar levels, it is crucial to prioritize their improvement. Making positive changes in your lifestyle, such as adopting a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep, can have a significant impact on these parameters. Consultation with a healthcare professional can provide tailored guidance and support in achieving optimal health. By taking proactive steps towards healthier living and considering the recommendations of healthcare professionals, individuals can pave the way for better health outcomes and a more secure future.

Health insurance

In our daily lives, we often set rules and boundaries for ourselves to maintain structure and discipline. While these rules can be beneficial, there are instances when breaking them can lead to unexpected growth and personal development. Today, I broke a self-imposed rule and did not feel guilty about it. I relised it.

It is important to enjoy the freedom that comes with breaking a rule while finding a way to return to our established norms.

Embracing growth through rule-breaking

Self-imposed rules are often established to create routines, maintain discipline, or uphold certain standards. However, occasionally challenging these rules can open doors to new opportunities and personal growth. By stepping out of our comfort zones and questioning the validity of our rules, we create room for exploration and self-discovery. Breaking rules can lead to fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a greater understanding of ourselves.

When we intentionally break a rule, we often experience a sense of liberation and excitement. The feeling of freedom can be invigorating and empower us to embrace new experiences and perspectives. By breaking a rule, we challenge the status quo, allowing ourselves to think outside the box and pursue paths we might have previously considered off-limits. It is essential to savor this joy and appreciate the sense of freedom that comes with rule-breaking.

Back to discipline

While breaking rules can be enlightening, it is equally important to recognize the value of structure and discipline. After enjoying the benefits of breaking a rule, finding a way to reintegrate back into established norms is essential for maintaining balance. Returning to the norm with a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose can help foster growth while preserving the benefits of structure.

Breaking rules does teach us the importance of flexibility and adaptability in life. It reminds us that rules should serve as guidelines rather than rigid boundaries. By being open to change and allowing ourselves to challenge existing norms, we become more resilient and adaptable to new situations.

The key to reaping the benefits of breaking rules lies in finding balance. It is important to strike a harmonious equilibrium between structure and exploration. This can be achieved by identifying the rules that truly align with our values and goals while also recognizing when it is appropriate to break them for personal growth. By consciously balancing rule-breaking experiences with a return to established norms, we create a healthy and sustainable approach to personal development.

Unveiling Gurgaon's dichotomy

Gurgaon, a thriving city on the outskirts of Delhi, is renowned for its rapid urban development and bustling corporate hub. As the city has grown, its residential rental market has witnessed a fascinating dichotomy, with high-rise buildings standing side by side with slums, and well-maintained roads intermingling with poorly maintained ones. I will delve into the contrasting elements of Gurgaon's rental market and explore the global rise in rents after the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with interest rate hikes implemented by central banks.

Gurgaon's rental market is a reflection of the city's rapid expansion and juxtaposition of different socioeconomic segments. While high-rise buildings boasting luxurious amenities cater to the affluent population, slums, unfortunately, coexist in close proximity, representing the socio-economic divide prevalent in many urban areas. This striking dichotomy serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in achieving equitable growth and affordable housing for all.

The rental market in Gurgaon presents another contrast in terms of infrastructure. While some areas boast impeccable roads, modern amenities, and well-maintained public spaces, others struggle with inadequate infrastructure, including poorly maintained roads, limited access to basic amenities, and insufficient public transportation. This disparity highlights the need for comprehensive urban planning and development strategies to bridge the gaps in infrastructure across the city.

Rental rebound after Covid-19

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the global rental market, including Gurgaon. As people adapted to remote work and sought larger living spaces, demand for rentals surged in some areas. With limited supply and increased demand, rents in popular locations witnessed an upward trend. This phenomenon was driven by shifting preferences, as individuals sought more spacious homes and a balance between work and lifestyle. However, it is important to note that the pandemic also led to economic hardships for many, exacerbating the challenges of affordable housing in Gurgaon.

Central bank hikes

Central banks around the world implemented measures to stabilize their respective economies and fight inflation. One of these measures included raising interest rates. Interest rate hikes can have a direct impact on the rental market as they affect borrowing costs for property owners and investors. Higher interest rates can lead to increased mortgage payments, which, in turn, may result in landlords passing on these costs to tenants through higher rents.

In the face of these challenges, individuals seeking rental accommodation in Gurgaon must navigate the market wisely. Researching different neighborhoods, understanding rental trends, and considering long-term affordability are key aspects to consider. Engaging with reputed real estate agents and consulting property experts can provide valuable insights and guidance in making informed decisions.

Gurgaon's residential rental market encapsulates a unique dichotomy, where towering high-rise buildings stand alongside slums, and modern infrastructure intertwines with underdeveloped areas. While the global rise in rents after the COVID-19 pandemic and interest rate hikes by central banks have influenced the rental market, the challenges of affordability and equitable access to housing persist.

Swimming goggles

Swimming goggles are essential accessories and designed to protect the eyes and enhance vision underwater. These specialized eyewear provide a watertight seal, preventing water from entering the eyes while allowing clear visibility. The lenses of swimming goggles are typically made from durable materials that are resistant to fogging and scratches, ensuring optimal clarity during every swim.

The experience of swimming is starkly different without goggles. It's like you don't know where you are going, what you are doing and what to expect next.

Flushing my goggles

Today, in a moment of absent-mindedness, I inadvertently sent my swimming goggles on an unexpected journey through the bathroom plumbing. After rinsing them with Dettol as a part of my weekly cleaning routine, my mind momentarily wandered. I sent the goggles spiraling into the abyss of the toilet bowl. A mix of surprise, frustration, and a touch of humor washed over me as I watched them disappear with a swift flush. It was a lighthearted reminder to remain focused even in the most mundane tasks and a comical tale to share with others. Alas, my swimming goggles became unexpected underwater explorers, navigating the intricate labyrinth of pipes, forever destined for a watery adventure in the sewage system.

Small losses

Dealing with such small losses and unexpected waste is frustrating. It is important to maintain a positive mindset and find constructive ways to address these situations. Firstly, it's crucial to acknowledge and accept the loss or waste without dwelling on it excessively. Recognize that setbacks happen to everyone and that they are part of life's unpredictable nature. Take a moment to breathe and gain perspective. Next, evaluate the situation and see if there are any lessons to be learned or preventive measures to be taken in the future. Reflecting on the experience can help you avoid similar incidents in the long run.

IPL is a rollercoaster

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a captivating spectacle that thrills fans around the world, and one of its most intriguing aspects lies in the excitement of its randomness. In each match, anything can happen, and the fortunes of teams can change in the blink of an eye. The unpredictability of the game keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating thrilling moments, unexpected twists, and nail-biting finishes. Whether it's a stunning catch, a last-minute run chase, or an unforeseen collapse, the IPL showcases the essence of sport in its purest form. The thrill of witnessing underdogs defy expectations and turn the tables on formidable opponents is a testament to the game's unpredictability. It is this very randomness that adds an element of suspense, making each match an adrenaline-filled rollercoaster ride. From the explosive power of the batsmen to the strategic brilliance of the bowlers, the IPL exemplifies the beauty of uncertainty, reminding us that in this enthralling game, anything can happen, and that is what makes it so exhilarating to watch.

Suryakumar Yadav

I watched the episode of Breakfast with Champions and got to know about Suryakumar Yadav or Sky - more about the man than the player. He is a trailblazer and a T20 specialist. This tweet by Virender Sehwag summarizes the blitz very well.

When an underdog wins, they win for everybody, because somebody gotta come through that door and break it open and make it possible.

I had just finished my dinner after a 5 km run and I had this urge to root for Suryakumar Yadav to get to his 100 on the last ball. I wonder how much listening about the struggles and desires from the first video influenced me. After all, I am not a supporter of Mumbai Indians or an avid cricket follower. Sky, is by no means, an underdog. He is the best rated T20 Batsman in the World ICC rankings as of today. But the way he explains his inner anguish and struggles to get to this spot, makes you want to root for him.

Rooting the underdog

There is a special kind of joy and satisfaction that comes with rooting for the underdog. When the odds are stacked against them, and their chances of success seem slim, it ignites a fire within us to support and rally behind them. We are drawn to their determination, resilience, and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. There is a sense of hope and inspiration in witnessing an underdog rise against all expectations, defying the skeptics and proving that anything is possible. We find ourselves emotionally invested, eagerly cheering them on, and celebrating their victories as if they were our own. Rooting for the underdog reminds us that success is not solely defined by statistics or rankings, but by the sheer will and belief to overcome obstacles. It teaches us the value of perseverance, the importance of embracing challenges, and the potential for greatness that lies within each of us. So, as we witness the underdog defy the odds, we are reminded that dreams can be achieved, and that sometimes, the most remarkable victories come from those who are least expected to triumph.

Swimming endurance

Over the past year, I have dedicated myself to improving my swimming endurance, and the results have been truly remarkable. Through consistent training and a determined mindset, I have transformed from a novice swimmer to someone capable of tackling long distances with ease. It all started with small, achievable goals that gradually pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I began by swimming a few laps each session, gradually increasing the distance week by week. I incorporated various drills and exercises into my routine, focusing on building strength, technique, and stamina. With each passing month, I felt my lungs expand and my muscles adapt to the demands of the water. The initial fatigue and breathlessness were gradually replaced with a sense of resilience and power. I can now proudly say that I can swim for extended periods without experiencing fatigue, allowing me to enjoy the water and explore new horizons with confidence. Building my swimming endurance over the past year has not only improved my physical fitness but also instilled in me a sense of accomplishment and the belief that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.

The water is your friend...you don't have to fight with water, just share the same spirit as the water, and it will help you move.

Audible membership model

Subscriptions are the only business model that is entirely based on the happiness of your customers. Think about it—when your customers are happy, then they’re using more of your service, and telling their friends, and you’re growing.

Most membership models are structure that the light-users subsidize the power-users. Be it your gym, club of the society or cult fit membership. Audible is no different and structures it via its policies.

Reading through the Audible India Service Conditions of Use, you will realize that:

  • Credit Rollover Limit: Customers can roll over a maximum of 5 credits i.e. next month's credits = max (previous month's credits + 1 - credits used, 6)
  • Any unused credits remaining on your account at the time of cancelation, or when your prepaid period ends, will be lost. We recommend using them first, as any audiobooks you purchase are yours to keep.

My Audible habits

I have observed the following about my usage of Audible:

  • Listening to a book is best done along with a long walk. I can walk for an hour and listen to a book and retain most of it.
  • In Nov 2022, Apple introduced fee on in-app purchases. Post that, you cannot buy books from the Audible iPhone app. It is really painful and annoying.
  • I only use the Audible App on my iPhone and have not tried it out on the TV, Windows (I use the Spotify Desktop app a lot).

Listening to a book is not only just as good as reading it. Sometimes, perhaps even often, it’s better.

Whatsapp is the new SMS

Whatsapp has deteriorated significantly in the last few years. From a default secure chat, it has become an avenue for businesses to push for more products and services. There's nothing wrong in it, but add to it the almost infinite number of groups, it is better to not be on Whatsapp. I am thinking if now is the time. I keep my Whatsapp notifications on mute nevertheless.

In other words, I open my SMS application only to look for OTPs. I am thinking of doing the same with Whatsapp.

Whatsapp Spam Blast

I have received the following business promotional messages in the last 24 hours - HDFC Bank, Jupiter, bbdaily, Prepladder, Clove Dental, 99 acres, Jumbaya.

Promotional Whatsapp Business Messages 10 May 2023

I understand the businesses seeking the same as Whatsapp provides a great curated audience for push sales. I wonder, how much are the Whatsapp users enjoying the same.

Standardization of products

The life of middle class India has transformed in the last 15 years. The standardization of products have compressed costs massively. Add to it, the growth in income, more people are able to afford a lot more products.

I tend to 'splurge' for convenience. I'll pay a lot to not waste time.

Standardization of services

With Uber & Ola, we have standardized cab experience. With Urban Company, we have standardized AC and home cleaning experience. While they are great services, I share my sentiment about Finding a Taxi by Kunal Kamra.

How many of us love the experience of Blu over Uber due to the quality of cars?

With the convenience & goodness of an app comes the stagnation of average quality. Local experts who provide high quality & nuanced services stand out.

The standardization of service can sometimes lead to a reduction in quality. When businesses strive for consistency and efficiency by implementing standardized processes and procedures, it can inadvertently result in a decline in the quality of the service provided. Standardization often focuses on streamlining operations, minimizing variations, and increasing productivity, which can overlook the individual needs and preferences of customers. This can lead to a lack of personalization and a diminished customer experience. Additionally, standardized services may prioritize speed and cost-effectiveness over delivering exceptional quality, leading to a compromise in the overall value provided to customers. It is crucial for businesses to strike a balance between standardization and maintaining a high level of quality to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty.

I recently got AC servicing done via Urban Company and found the experience average at best. Of course they have standardized the experience and compress costs, but by design, Experts would not stick around on the platform or marketplace. They will command a premium for their additional efforts and skill.
